The Howard League for Penal Reform in Scotland

Gillian Bishop

A tribute to the former Secretary and Director of the Howard League in Scotland who died in October 2003

Gillian Bishop died in October 2003. She had been an active member of the Howard League in Scotland for many years. Latterly she was it's Honorary Secretary and ultimately Director. She was passionate about improving conditions and increasing the range of positive opportunities for prisoners and was committed to reducing the excessive use of imprisonment within our criminal justice system. An architect by profession she played a pivotal role in the world renowned projects to regenerate inner city Baltimore USA in the 1980s. Indeed from her involvement in a wealth of innovative architectural projects she was uniquely well informed on the design of prison and the future of the prisons estate. She continued working tirelessly for the League even when her health was deteriorating. It was only in the final few months of her illness that she withdrew from the arduous role of 'Secretary and Director'. She gave enormous support to our executive and the membership of the League which grew under her influence. Gillian remained thoroughly committed to the work of the League to the end. She will be greatly missed.
