will be presenting on Wednesday 29 September 2004 a lecture entitled: The Vanishing Organisation: Managing Organisational Anxiety in a Networked World The nature of organisations has changed in the last decade. This is true for both public and private sector institutions, and indeed the interpenetration of these two domains is an aspect of the change process. If we now live and work in a much more fluid, ‘networked’ world rather than a world of well-bounded and relatively stable organisational forms, what impact does this have on our emotional life at work and on our capacity to manage organisational anxiety? The lecture will be given by: Andrew Cooper, Professor of Social Work at the Tavistock Clinic and the University of East London Professor Cooper is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and practises as a clinical social worker in the Adolescent Department of the Tavistock Clinic. He has consulted to a range of social service organisations, and is presently completing a book about the changing nature of the modern welfare state. In the lecture Professor Cooper will draw upon his experiences of working in, and consulting to, staff in organisations that are subject to processes of reconfiguration, service integration, and rapid cultural change. He will suggest that our familiar range of psychoanalytic concepts for understanding and working with emotional experience in organisations stands in need of revision. Managers and front line staff experience themselves as vulnerable in new ways, and traditional sources of ‘containment’ may be no longer available. In the lecture Professor Cooper will look at the psychic and social consequences of this state of affairs, and what resources can we draw upon to help us think about modern organisational experience The lecture will be held at the William Robertson Building, University of Edinburgh, George Square, Edinburgh.
